Are Trader Joe’s Everything But the Bagel Potato Chips in the Works?

Trader Joe’s is no stranger to developing, testing and releasing new, improved, and soon-to-be-cult-favorite products. And, undoubtedly, the Trader Joe’s product with the most acclaim since it hit shelves in 2017 — one that gained popularity seemingly overnight — is Everything But the Bagel Seasoning. And while the grocer has capitalized off the popularity of the seasoning once with Everything But the Bagel Greek Style Yogurt dip, Trader Joe’s plans to launch not one but two new “Everything But the” products in the near future, including Everything But the Bagel Potato Chips.

“What’s big right now in spices?” asks Trader Joe’s Marketing Director Tara Miller during Episode 18 of “Inside Trader Joe’s – a Podcast.” “You definitely cannot talk about spices at Trader Joe’s and not mention the Everything but the Bagel Seasoning. I mean you want to talk about setting trends? We’re setting them,” responds Jasmine Mkrtchya, the category manager of groceries at Trader Joe’s.

Mkrtchya goes on to say that she recently tasted Everything but the Bagel Potato Chip, ” which didn’t have enough of, we thought didn’t have enough garlic nor onion flavor, and the sesame seeds were hard to adhere to the shape of the potato and the garlic had all fallen off. So that’s still a work in progress…”

That’s all we know about the new, everything bagel-flavored potato chips, but we do know thanks to this podcast that Trader Joe’s plans to release Everything But the Elote early next year.

“Everything But the Elote is a great idea,” Miller says later in the podcast, to which Catherine Rhodes, a TJ’s product developer, responds, “So, we made it happen. It’s dehydrated corn. There’s some parmesan
cheese, chili, chipotle peppers, a little bit of buttermilk flavor, cilantro and cumin. And that’s it. It’s a very simple seasoning but it’s great on corn.”

Rhodes add that you can add the new elote products on veggies, chicken, cauliflower rice, enchiladas — you name it.

“I think it’s going to be the next big thing,” Rhodes adds. “Zero calories, zero fat.”

For those unfamiliar with the versatile and addictive seasoning blend, Everything But the Bagel is comprised of white and black sesame seeds, poppy seeds, sea salt flakes, dried garlic and dried onions was so versatile.

“We were just talking about different blends one day and that one came up in conversation and then we tweaked it to reduce the salt and they’ve had a lot of garlic,” says Lori Latta, TJ’s VP of product innovation, in the podcast of how the seasoning blend came about. “We just kept tweaking it until we thought it was a pretty wonderful blend.”
