Bride asks maid of honor to lose 30 pounds before wedding in outrageous phone call

A Florida woman is sharing her outrage after being asked to lose 30 pounds before her friend’s wedding.

In a post shared to Reddit’s “r/relationship_advice” page on Tuesday, the 33-year-old woman explained a recent situation that unfolded after she was asked to be the friend’s maid of honor.

Both the friend and her fiancé — who work as personal fitness trainers — approached the woman with a full diet and fitness plan leading up to the wedding. The woman said the suggestion made her consider skipping the wedding.

“Tonight [my friend] called me with the ‘best’ news,” the woman wrote on Reddit. “Her fiancé and her are putting together a great work out and meal plan together for me.”

The Redditor wrote that she wears a size 10 dress and is “not obese, but definitely on the fatter [side].” However, she said she was happy with her image and considered herself to be perfectly healthy.

“I’m very comfortable with who I am, and my doctor is too,” her post read.

The post said that her friend specifically suggested she drop between 20 and 30 pounds, in order to make the wedding photos more “symmetric.” The Redditor added that the fitness plan was completely unprovoked.

“She was so happy and excited, like she was doing me a favor,” she wrote. “I’ve never [asked] for help, I’ve never mentioned wanting to lose weight. They both just kind of took it upon themselves to ‘help’ me.”

According to the post, these comments convinced the woman to withdraw from being her friend’s maid of honor, despite the fact that the two had known each other since they were children. She later texted her friend and said she would not attend the wedding, according to the Daily Mail.

“I told her I’ve never been embarrassed about my size, why would I now? She simply didn’t have an answer,” the woman told the Daily Mail.

Other Redditors weighed in with sympathetic comments, sharing support and their own stories in the thread.

“I would 100 percent be absolutely livid if someone asked me that,” one comment said. “If she can’t find it within herself to be happy for you… then she is not a friend.”

Another user suggested a creative way for the woman to tell her friend she wouldn’t be attending.

“Hey friend I’ll do you one better this is my total weight xxx you can just subtract that number from your wedding party!” the comment said.

The Redditor, who has since deleted her original post, shared an update on Thursday saying she’d spoken with her friend and decided again to attend the wedding. But she added that she would still not be participating as a maid of honor.

“I have no idea what the friendship holds after this, but I still want to be there to cheer her on for the wedding.. but I don’t have to be immersed in every aspect,” the new post read.
