I Tried A 3 Day Juice Cleanse And Here's What Happened

I am not usually one for fad diets but for the purpose of this article I thought I would get ‘bikini body ready’ and try a 3-day juice cleanse.

I lead a fairly healthy lifestyle, I got to the gym at least five times a week, don’t eat junk food (well sometimes but not often) and have good self control when sticking to healthy diet. So how hard could three days of juices be?

But I’m afraid it was A LOT harder than anticipated. So to give you the low down for three days I drank six 470ml juices (one every 3 hours), 3 litres of water a day and didn’t exercise.

Day 1

Was pretty exciting. I had all of my brightly coloured juices arrive to my door – delivered icy cold and fresh! How good is that? Plus no cooking for three days!

The juices are labelled in order of how you should drink them, each time I crack the lid of a new juice it’s exciting to find out what the new flavour will taste like. But by the end of the day I am feeling like a big blob of liquid. Including water I am drinking 5,760ml of liquid per day. Yes, I’ve been going to the bathroom very frequently but not enough to expel 5L of liquid – hello blob life.

Day 2

Today, I had (this time) a legit excuse to skip the gym = sleep in! I bounded into work on a solid 8 hours of sleep. I continue sipping on the colourful drinks (which take me a surprisingly long time to finish) and after each juice I go through a sugar high for about 30mins where I am annoyingly happy, motivated and full of energy before crumbling into the pits of headaches, tiredness and despair. Unfortunately, the fun has already worn off, I know which drinks I like and look forward too and which ones I am going to suffer through.

I had a headache pretty much all day and was irritable to say the least. My teeth are getting fury from all of the natural sugar in the juices and all I want to do is chew – something I never thought I’d say.

A fellow juicey gave me a secret tip that you can heat up some of the juices for a different sensation so I gave this a go and had a “juice soup” for dinner. Surprisingly it wasn’t too bad and gave me the illusion that I was having something other than juice.

Day 3

I made sleep a big priority during the cleanse (getting at least 8 hours a night) and my energy levels are sky high. My colleagues have started stopping me to comment on my complexion. My skin is noticeably glowing and the whites of my eyes are bright.

I trudged through the final six juices with the finish line in sight and I have to say I will be glad when this is over.

Finished!

I had the avocado toast I’d been dreaming of chewing for three days for breakfast and it was possibly even better than I anticipated.

Overall, I lost 3kgs in three days, pretty impressive but to be honest I think it will probably just pile back on now I am back onto solids. I was pleasantly surprised at how my complexion changed and energy levels increased. In the short term it worked but I worry about the longevity of my weight loss.

I think the cleanse is a good way to kick start a healthy eating routine but it isn’t for the feint hearted.

Give me a juice any day just not every day.
