This Is Exactly What Fitness Guru Tanya Poppett Eats In A Day

Meet Tanya Poppett. She’s many things: a trainer, fitness influencer and Adidas ambassador with a penchant for a plant-based diet and a passion for holistic life-balance. So, when it comes to the world of wellness, it’s safe to say she knows her sh*t. We recently hit her up to chat about her healthy habits, how she maintains motivation and her support for Adidas’ latest collaboration with eco-friendly initiative, Parley.

You’re a proud supporter of the Adidas x Parley initiative, why is the cause so important to you?

I believe the cause is important to everyone. The ocean is responsible for the air we breathe, the water we drink and the planet we are lucky enough to live on… so WE need to take responsibility for our oceans.

I think we all need to see the damage we are doing for it to truly sink in. Even starting the conversation and bringing this urgent issue to the forefront will help it gain some momentum. I believe that’s one of the major successes of Run For The Oceans. It’s getting the world talking. Aside from raising much-needed funds to help Parley succeed in their mission of a reducing ocean plastic.

Do you have a food philosophy you live by?

Some food is good for the body and some food is good for the soul. I’m all about eating a balanced and nutritious plate but always save a little room for dessert.

I’ve been following a vegan lifestyle for the past 4 years as well but that is mainly due to ethical reasons rather than a nutritional standpoint.

What does your average day on a plate look like?

I don’t really have any fixed eating habits but here is a general outline:

Breakfast:
Protein Oats + Raspberries (using plant-based protein)
Coffee with soy milk (either French press at home or soy flat if I’m out)

Snack:
Banana and peanut butter toast.

Lunch:
Falafel + salad + quinoa + hummus buddah bowl.

Snack:
Fruit, nuts and carrot sticks

Dinner:
Tofu curry with brown rice.

Dessert:
Dark chocolate 25g (sometimes 50g haha)

Cheat meal of choice?

I’m not a big fan of the term ‘cheat’ meal as I don’t believe it promotes a positive relationship with food. I’m AM a big fan of chocolate and ice cream though. There are some epic plant-based options around now!

Talk us through your approach to fitness

Training for me is about moving better, feeling better and giving me confidence that my body can support my lifestyle. Movement doesn’t finish with our workout. In life, we are constantly moving in and out of positions. It’s important to be mindful of our bodies throughout the day and bring back that awareness to how we are: sitting, standing, breathing. Are we constantly hunched over a phone or computer screen, do we take the stairs or the lift? The corrections we make in the gym only work if we apply them to our daily life.

Fave pre and post-workout snacks?

Pre: It’s dependent on the session usually but I like some dried fruit and nut before I train. Their nice light but full of energy.

Post: A smoothie with berries, cacao, coconut water and some plant protein for the refuel and recovery.

As a trainer for active escapes you’re always travelling – how do you sustain your healthy habits when you’re out of routine?

Well, I’m super lucky because our Active Escapes retreats are all about that! Healthy, balanced meals prepared for breakfast, lunch and dinner to fuel us through all our activities; workouts, obstacle course, surfing, wake-boarding, yoga.

I try to sneak in my own sessions in between my coaching the crew their daily workouts but getting enough movement definitely isn’t an issue in the action-packed weeks.

What’s your secret to maintaining holistic life balance?

Movement and nutrition are a part of life. To maintain a holistic lifestyle you need to take an integrated approach. Movement doesn’t stop at the gym, nutrition isn’t in a meal plan and a search for happiness won’t make you happy. The choices we make daily set us on our path, we just have to make sure the choices we make set us on the path we want to take.

How do you keep motivated when you’re feeling anything but?

Motivation is amplified by ‘purpose’. Dig deep and find your ‘why’ and remind yourself of it daily. This will feed the discipline and habit needed to bring this to life. It’s also important to note that motivation is fleeting and it’s usually not there when you need it.

First of all, find out why you’re not feeling motivated that day; are you fatigued? Out of routine? Sore? Hungry?

If this can be easily solved than solve it. If exercise is going to solve it, then exercise. If exercise is going to make it worse, then rest or adjust your training accordingly.

Any predictions for the next big trends in activewear?

High waisted tights have been going strong for a while now because they are so damn comfy… I’m loving the V-cut on the waist of leggings at the moment though. It is so flattering. Adidas have a pair in the Alpha Skin range and they are my absolute favourite. A trend that will be around for a long time though is sustainability with people being encouraged to make more sustainable choices. Again, the Parley x Adidas partnership will make waves around the world over the next few years and hearing about their commitment to only use recycled plastic in their products by 2024 just reinforces that.

You’ve been open about your battles with breakouts – what’s the best advice you’ve ever received when it comes to looking after your skin?

I usually take breakouts as a message from my body that something may not be quite right. It is usually when I’ve been working different hours, travelling a lot and not giving myself enough chance to recover. Whilst natural, topical treatments are great to relieve the breakouts. I like to look more to lifestyle to help keep my skin in check.
