Water Check of Öko-Test: uranium, arsenic, pesticides – every 4. Bottled water is charged
Öko-Test examined 53 carbonated mineral water of the variety of “Classic”. Including water places of discounters and supermarkets, but also classic brands. The result: Twelve sparkling varieties contain questionable ingredients such as pesticide-degradation products, uranium, or arsenic.
The German drank in the past year, 150 litres of water per head. 11.7 billion litres, according to the Association of German mineral wells as a whole, even because of the extreme heat in the summer.
Natural mineral water must, according to the Mineral – and table water regulation can hardly be treated – in contrast to tap water. The legislator speaks of the so-called “original purity”. In twelve mineral waters, the experts of Öko-Test, however, found substances that have to do with the purity of nothing.
Particularly problematic substances such as are
- Uranium
- Arsenic
- Boron
You can loosen the soil in a natural way from the layers of rock through which the water flows. “Öko-Test” complains that uranium accumulate in the body and kidneys and may cause lung damage. Arsenic is also considered to be carcinogenic.
Eleven of the tested bottled water contained degradation products of pesticides. In four other Water the testers found sweeteners for the domestic sewage in the bubble. These substances are a health, however, not critical.
Winners and losers among brands and supermarket-water

One of the most well-known types of water, however, in the Test with the grade ‘unsatisfactory’ by The "Apollinaris Classic" exceeds the limit value for boron in drinking water. The bottled water also has an elevated arsenic value.
