Weight loss and New Year resolutions are often synonymous but with so many promising to be the holy grail of weight loss wonder how can you really tell which one’s work best? The answer often lies down to the one’s back by science.
Fibre is a carbohydrate found in plant foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Unlike other carbs, it isn’t easily digested by the body, so it passes quickly through the system without causing the blood sugar to rise.
All fruits and vegetables have fibre, but it’s mostly concentrated in the skin, seeds and membranes.
Fibre can be extracted and made into fibre supplements.
Fibre also plays an integral role in helping to regulate one’s appetite as it helps you feel fuller for longer reducing the amount of food and snacks one might consume.

In a study published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, fibre supplementation and how it could impact weight loss was analysed.
The study looked at overweight women who were given either a placebo or fibre supplements.
The study concluded the group who took the fibre supplements had lost a significant amount more of weight compared to the placebo group.
Dr Frank Hu, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School said: “In addition to weight control, higher fibre diets can also help prevent type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.”

Caffeine is one of the most commonly consumed psychoactive substances in the world which is enjoyed by millions.
Caffeine is found naturally in coffee, green tea and dark chocolate and can also be taken as a supplement.
Caffeine is the holy grail when it comes to boosting your metabolism and is therefore often added to weight loss supplements.
There are some studies indicating that caffeine supplements could have a modest effect on weight loss.
In a study published in the American Journal of Physiology, the effects of caffeine ingestion on fat oxidation and energy expenditure in younger and older men was analysed.
The study said: “Age-related differences in energy expenditure, fat oxidation, and norepinephrine (NE) kinetics after caffeine ingestion were examined using a placebo-controlled double-blind study in 10 older and 10 younger men who were moderate consumers of caffeine.
“Rates of fat oxidation and NE appearance and clearance did not significantly differ from baseline values in either group.
“In conclusion, older and younger men show a similar thermogenic response to caffeine ingestion, whereas older men show a smaller increase in fatty acid availability after a caffeine challenge.
“These metabolic differences are not related to alterations in NE kinetics or fat oxidation.”
There are many different weight loss solutions out there including all sorts of pills, drugs and natural supplements.
These are claimed to help you lose weight, or at least make it easier to lose weight combined with other methods.
The mechanisms of many of these weight loss supplements come down to their ability at reducing appetite, reducing absorption or their ability in increasing fat burning.
