Diabetes is a common medical condition that’s caused by blood sugar levels becoming too high. If you have diabetes, you could benefit from making a few diet swaps to avoid unwanted complications.

About five million people have been diagnosed with diabetes in the UK.

But, there are likely to be far more cases than that, as huge numbers of people may be at risk without even knowing it.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes, accounting for about 90 percent of all cases.

It’s caused by the body not producing enough of the hormone insulin, or the body not reacting to insulin.

Eating the right foods can go a long way to maintaining healthy blood sugar levels.

However, on occasion, you might be tempted to go all out and order a takeaway.

While it’s not an ideal plan, because you can’t track exactly what you’re eating, there are ways around it to avoid blood sugar spikes, but also to satisfy your craving.

In fact, choosing a Lebanese takeaway is the “ultimate healthy” choice, according to This Morning’s Dr Sara.

“Your preference would be to look into foods that are well-balanced,” Dr Sara told Express Health. “So vegetables, carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats all in one plate.

“You also want to think about how those foods are cooked. High saturated fats are less healthy for you. If you can look at grilled types of foods, then that’s often a better choice.

“If you are going to have your protein as a meat – if you could try and have a meat that would be less heavy in the saturated areas, so less of the red meat and more of the poultry or fish.

“I think a good place to start, and my preference, is like a Lebanese takeaway, because you can have grilled meat, you can have a little bit of rice, and they often come with lots of salad and vegetables. So, that for me is an ultimate healthy takeaway.”

Diabetes shouldn’t be a barrier to enjoying the occasional takeaway, added charity Diabetes UK.

You can have fish and chips, for example, but try to make good choices.

Consider ordering a smaller portion than normal, or even removing the batter from the fish.

Thicker chips are also more preferable than thin-cut chips, because they absorb less fat, it said.

You should consider speaking to a doctor if you’re worried about your risk of diabetes.

It’s not always easy to know if you’re at risk, because the symptoms don’t necessarily make you feel ill.

Look out for persistent fatigue, passing more urine than normal, or feeling unusually thirsty.

Diagnosing the condition early is crucial, because it raises the risk of heart disease and strokes.
