Here's Why You Should Spend More Time With Your Mum

When’s the last time you called your mum? According to a new study, the more time you spend with your mum, the longer she will live.

The study conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, found that there was a link between loneliness and functional decline which caused premature death in older people.

Loneliness In Older People was published in JAMA Internal Medicine, and studied 1,600 adults with an average age of 71.

Nearly 23 percent of participants that were found to be lonely died within the first six years of the study, compared to 14 percent of those reporting adequate levels of companionship. This was largely put down to the theory that health conditions can worsen due to psychosocial distress like depression and social isolation, which has been supported by past studies.

The research also found that 43 percent of people over 60 feel isolated.

This study supports another recent study conducted in 2014, which suggests that loneliness is twice as unhealthy as obesity in older people.
