High Blood pressure: Does high blood pressure cause tiredness?

A third of UK adults have high blood pressure, but many are not aware of it. There are few symptoms of high blood pressure, but if you ignore it you are putting your life at risk. Are there any symptoms of high blood pressure? And does high pressure cause tiredness?

What is high blood pressure?

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is when your blood pressure is 140/90mmHg or above.

The lower number marks the resistance to the blood flow in the blood vessels, and the higher number is the force at which your heart pumps blood around your body.

Having high blood pressure increases your risk of heart disease, heart attack, strokes, and many more life-threatening illnesses.

Who is at risk of high blood pressure?

The NHS website says you are more at risk of high blood pressure if you:

  • are over the age of 65
  • are overweight
  • are of African or Caribbean descent
  • have a relative with high blood pressure
  • eat too much salt and do not eat enough fruit and vegetables
  • do not do enough exercise
  • drink too much alcohol or coffee (or other caffeine-based drinks)
  • smoke
  • do not get much sleep or have disturbed sleep

What are the symptoms of high blood pressure?

There are not any clear symptoms of high blood pressure, but there are symptoms that may be indirectly related to high blood pressure.

This doesn’t mean they are caused by high blood pressure, though, so always go to the relevant healthcare professional instead of self-diagnosing,

For example, dizziness is often a side effect of high blood pressure medication and not caused by your blood pressure itself.

Does high blood pressure cause tiredness?

Fatigue often occurs as a result of medication management and lifestyle choices, but it can also be caused by high blood pressure itself.

People with high blood pressure often have the condition because they do not exercise enough and eat a lot of food that is high in salt and fat.

Poor lifestyle choices like this will leave you lacking in energy.

Medication that slows the pumping of the heart may deplete your body of essential electrolytes, this means you stop producing energy and feel tired.

High blood pressure can in theory cause tiredness itself since there is an elevated pressure on vital organs such as the brain, heart and kidneys.

Your body has to work much harder to function than it would if your blood pressure was lower.

You may feel tired even after a full night’s sleep.

How do I manage high blood pressure?

Firstly you must improve your lifestyle by exercising more and reducing your salt intake.

Try to get out in the sun, as surprisingly sunlight plays a role in lowering your blood pressure.

Although it’s difficult, you also need to try not to sweat the small things.

Stress increases heart rate and causes blood vessels to narrow, raising blood pressure temporarily.
