Many myths surround steroids, some of which may put people off taking them. People often mistakenly confuse steroids, which are routinely prescribed to treat a wide range of conditions, and anabolic steroids, which are often used illegally by some people to increase their muscle mass. Doctor Chris went on ITV’s This Morning on Monday to bust some of the myths.

It’s important to note that steroids can still cause adverse effects, warned Doctor Chris.

Steroids can have “widespread effects” in the body, the TV doc warned.

These include:

  • Indigestion
  • Heartburn
  • Increased appetite
  • Weight gain
  • Changes in blood sugar.

However, these effects only occur at a “fairly high dose” and when taken “for a long period of time”, noted Doctor Chris.

Performance enhancing steroids – anabolic steroids – on the other hand can cause serious problems, the TV doc warned.

These “man made” steroids build muscle mass and decrease fat but they do not make you any healthier or fitter.

According to Doctor Chris, “horrendous” side effects can occur, such as erectile dysfunction, erectile dysfunction and balding.

In addition to serious side effects, they can also cause addiction, he warned.

According to the NHS, people of all ages have been known to misuse these drugs, including adolescent boys who suffer from body dysmorphic disorder.

This is a mental health condition where a person spends a lot of time worrying about flaws in their appearance.

“Boys and men who have body dysmorphic disorder may take anabolic steroids because they don’t see themselves as being physically big enough or strong enough,” explains the NHS.

The health body notes that many people who use anabolic steroids are aware of the dangers of taking them, and believe that by taking the drugs in certain ways they can avoid side effects.
