What It Means If You’re A Fixed Sign In Astrology

Even if you check your horoscope on the reg (read: every day), sometimes, it can still feel like you need a decoder ring to suss out the meaning of astrology-specific phrases. Case in point: “fixed sign.”

Um, WTH is that supposed to mean, and what does it say about you? Like, are you Ms. Fix It, or are you more of a fixer upper? Jk jk, it doesn’t mean either (well, not exactly, anyway).

Not to worry, here to your astro-rescue is Donna Page, a certified astrologer.

What exactly does it mean to be a fixed sign?

If you’re an astrology buff, you’ve probably know how your rising sign, Moon sign, and even Mercury sign all play into your personality. But you might not know there are three different types of signs, each coming with its own set of so-called “qualities” in astrology.

You can either be a cardinal, mutable, or fixed sign, with four Sun signs falling into each category.

How can you tell if you’re a fixed sign?

The fixed sign is determined by your Sun sign, a.k.a. the one you look for when you read your horoscope. If you’re a Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, or Aquarius, you’re a fixed sign, Page says. Easy peasy.

Not one of those four? Then you’re either a cardinal sign—Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn—or a mutable sign—Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces.

What are the common traits of a fixed sign?

In general, being a fixed sign means that you’re basically a creature of habit. “When you find what you want, and you’re comfortable with it, you’re not willing to change or don’t want to change,” says Page.

So, don’t be too surprised if you’re just now noticing that you always eat the same breakfast every day (guilty), love rewatching your favourite TV show (Friends binge, anyone?), or never change your route to work (hey, at least you’re not late!). In contrast, cardinal signs are generally the leaders of the zodiac, and mutable signs are more flexible and comfortable with change.

Basically, you like things the way you like them, m’kay?

How does being a fixed sign impact your life?

Like everything in life, there are some pros and cons to being a fixed sign. “When fixed signs know what they want, they’re not going to give up and are willing to give things a chance instead of saying, ‘It didn’t come easy, so I’ll just try something else,'” Page says. That can pay off big time in certain areas of your life that require patience and effort, like your career and fitness goals. Ditto with your relationships—you’re super loyal and, really, who wouldn’t want to be with someone like that?

On the flip side, being a fixed sign can mean that you hold onto things too long, Page says. You might have some serious hoarding tendencies and can even stay in a relationship way past its expiration date because you want to make it work, even when someone so doesn’t deserve you. Being a fixed sign can also impact little things in your life, like making you want to order the same thing every time you eat out.

What else should you know about being a fixed sign?

It’s totally okay to like things a certain way, but that can end up holding you back in the long run. That’s why it’s so important for you to push yourself out of your comfort zone now and then, even if it’s as simple as ordering something different at Starbucks. “There could be more out there,” Page says.

Ultimately, being a fixed sign isn’t necessarily a good or bad thing. It’s just another part of what makes you the way you are.
