Lady Gaga Avoids White Flour While On Tour

What is it like living la vida Gaga? Fans know Lady Gaga has a lot on her plate, acting, singing, and much more. What they may not know is she also has a lot of healthy foods on her literal plate for breakfast, lunch, and dinner to fuel her busy life.

The “Shallow” singer’s personal chef and lifelong friend Bo O’Connor knows all about Gaga and what goes into her diet. They grew up together, both pursuing their passions. “She’s always been into the arts, and I’ve always been into food, so we did both things together,” O’Connor told The New Potato. “In high school, I’d have dinner parties at my apartment and I’d cook a bunch of different things and make a mess of my parent’s kitchen and she would always be involved.”

O’Conner says that Gaga is pretty healthy on tour, which is essential to help fuel successful performances. “She usually puts on an intense show, so she can’t be eating Doritos, clearly,” O’Connor told The Feast. Exactly what she whipped up for Gaga, who btw is an “adventurous eater,” varied from country to country and what ingredients were available. “But in general she tried to stay away from anything that was super processed or made with white flour,” O’Connor says, noting the singer opted for whole-wheat and whole-grain products, instead.

With a kitchen assist from O’Connor, here’s what the Lady Gaga eats in a day:

The Mother Monster gets off to a healthy start first thing in the morning. “It would usually involve some type of eggs or egg whites, definitely vegetables, a lot of vegetables, and sometimes Greek yogurt or different types of fruit, or healthy granola,” O’Connor told The Feast.

“If [Gaga] was in the mood for French toast or something sweeter, we would make a healthier version of that for her.” Think: whole-wheat bread instead of white. This is an example of what O’Conner calls a “half-cheat meal,” or a slightly more nutritious version of a traditionally not-so-healthy dish.

Gaga’s go-to snacks include whole-grain pretzels, GG crispbread crackers, rice crisps, health bars, nuts, and baked chips. She varies her snacks with some sweet and some savory, like bittersweet chocolate or a squeeze pack of almond butter.

Lady Gaga also makes sure to stay hydrated through rehearsals and performances. On the road, she drinks a lot of tea, fresh coconut water, and fresh green juice, O’Connor told The Feast. Gaga steers clear of any processed juices, but “if she were to drink juice, it would be a green juice made fresh with kale and spinach and celery and cucumbers, parsley, lemon.”

“Sometimes when she wasn’t feeling great or felt run-down we would make a hot drink with fresh turmeric, fresh ginger, lemongrass, to try to just calm her system,” O’Connor said.

Gaga often fills up on salads during lunch. “She definitely will always have a salad throughout the day, whether it’s for lunch or dinner,” O’Connor told People. These aren’t your humdrum garden salads, hers include a lot more than lettuce. “It can have other components that are a little bit more satisfying,” she adds.

Gaga hasn’t strayed far from her roots when it comes to her fave meals. “She’s definitely an Italian girl at heart, so she loves the red sauce, or gravy as they call it,” O’Connor says. A few of her family recipes appear in her dad, Joe Germanotta’s Joanne Trattoria Cookbook.

For a slightly healthier version, she’ll opt for gluten-free or quinoa pasta, served with veggies, and grilled shrimp for protein.

“At home though, with her hair down, whether I’m cooking or we’re going out, she’ll usually pick Italian,” O’Connor told The New Potato. “She’s a really good cook! She’s a way better cook than I am a singer–that’s for sure!”
