Our Honest Review of Color Wow's New Dream Coat Formula for Curls
Although I pride myself on being a beauty-product encyclopedia, I knew almost nothing about the beloved Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray until recently. The only bit of information I had about it was it was heat-activated. I don't own a blow dryer and have curly hair, so the Best of Beauty Award winner slipped under my radar.
Color Wow fully has my attention now, though, because it just dropped Dream Coat for Curly Hair. It's a heat-free version of the smoothing spray made specifically for those who embrace their ringlets, waves, and coils. Color Wow swears it's the only product you need to keep your curls right and tight, no matter what type they are. You can spray it on, let your hair air-dry (or diffuse it, if you wish), and you'll be good to go. To see if that was so, I gave the new launch a test drive on my curls.
Like the original Dream Coat, the curly-hair version comes in an identical metallic silver spray bottle. I was admittedly skeptical about using a spray on my curls because I wasn't sure if it would evenly coat them. I also had reservations about whether it was formulated with drying alcohols and feared it would make my hair crunchier than when girls at my middle school in South Florida would scrunch their hair into curls with gel.
All my fears were a waste of time because the Dream Coat for Curly Hair contains zero alcohol and made my hair feel incredibly soft and hydrated. It's nothing like a spray-on gel or stiff hairspray either. Instead, the product feels like you're spritzing your hair with water. Because of this, it doesn't weigh down curls before they even have a chance to dry and form. Making sure the spray evenly coats your hair is where things get tricky, though.
The first time I used the Dream Coat for Curly Hair, I don't think I used enough because my ringlets weren't as defined as usual, and I had some stray hairs that were straight. The instructions recommend sectioning off your hair and saturating your hair with the spray. I have a lob, so I pulled half my hair up and misted the bottom half of my hair before doing the top half.
The second time around, I was more generous with my application and even put some of the product in my hand before raking it through my hair. After letting my hair air dry, my curls sprung up to their truest potential. Also, true to the Dream Coat legacy, my hair didn't start growing the second I stepped outside on a humid day. Unlike the rest of my sweaty body, my curls seemed oblivious to the balmy weather.
The Dream Coat for Curly Hair's anti-humidity powers aside, I wish it gave my curls longer-lasting definition. By the second day, they started to hang a bit more loosely than usual, so I had to refresh them with the Morrocanoil Curl Re-Energizing Spray. I would prefer a continuous spray dispenser, too. Pressing the nozzle over and over again was like a workout for my finger. You might get a cramp if you have longer hair. But this is just me being picky. The pros mostly outweigh these cons.
I will also say that for tighter, kinkier curls, this might not work as well. Digital Editor Jihan Forbes tried this for herself on her 3c/4a curls and concluded that she wouldn't be able to use it alone. "The way my hair is set up, I definitely need something more moisturizing and thicker in order for my curls to hold," she says. "But this works as a good primer for me."
