Fitness Star Emily Skye’s Latest Instagram Post Is A Must-Read For All New Mums
On social media, she appears to be taking motherhood in her stride. But behind closed doors, it’s a very different story for fitness guru Emily Skye.
Just one month after giving birth to her first child – a baby girl named Mia – Emily has taken to Instagram to reveal she’s been battling with her mental health.
“When I first had Mia I was obviously over the moon…” she began the lengthy post. “But something I haven’t shared with you all is I suffered badly with the baby blues.”
“I’d previously heard about the ‘baby blues’ but I’d never understood it. I couldn’t ever imagine feeling down after having Mia. Well it happened to me!”
The 33-year-old told her 2.2 million followers that she barely slept after giving birth, and along with an influx of hormones this left her feeling “really depressed.”
“Your body goes through SO much having a baby, and while most of the changes are physical and obvious, there are a lot of things that aren’t so obvious, like your hormones and emotions,” she continued.
“I spent at least 10 days feeling really sad and I cried constantly for no reason! I couldn’t understand how I was so blessed and happy to have my precious Mia and yet I felt soooo miserable.”
With time the new mum noticed that the feelings started to pass. She managed to get some shut-eye, her hormones began to balance and she slowly began exercising.
“I started some light workouts (mainly walking…) and I felt so much better instantly. It’s amazing how good you feel after moving your body and getting the blood flowing.”
“The natural high you get is the best – I hadn’t had that in about 4 months and oh how I’d missed that feeling!”
Due to a long-term back injury and sciatica, Emily was unable to exercise for the majority of her pregnancy.
“I was just too uncomfortable & it was starting to make my back & sciatica worse,” she admitted in a previous Instagram post. “I made the choice to listen to my body & stop.”
But now she’s been given the all clear to return to fitness, she’s realised what a powerful tool it can be to keep new mums in a healthy mindset.
“This is the main reason I choose the lifestyle I have – it makes me feel so good and no matter what I’m going through at the tie I’m able to deal with it so much better when I’m exercising!
“If you have been putting off getting fit please just do it – you won’t regret it!” she added.
“Yes starting is hard, yes you’re going to feel uncomfortable, yes it’s going to take commitment and time and HELL YES it WILL be totally worth it!”
