Reishi mushrooms have been used for medicinal purposes for at least 2,000 years. The mushrooms were known to the ancients as “the mushroom of immortality”—and for good reason. They had the reputation of promoting health and longevity, boosting the immune system, and reducing the risk of life-shortening conditions such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Reishi is composed of several molecules that are said to be responsible for its health-promoting effects.

These molecules include the combination of polysaccharides, peptidoglycans and triterpenoids which are believed to provide major nutritional benefits.

Reishi is one of the most extensively studied herbs in the world.

Numerous clinical studies have tested the various effects of Reishi, with results indicating that Reishi boosts immunity and promotes longevity.

In a study published in the National Library of Medicine, the lifespan-promoting effect of acetic acid and Reishi polysaccharide was analysed.

The study found that the polysaccharides, or long chains of carbohydrates, found in the Reishi mushroom had lifespan-extending properties.

These unique molecules were linked to promoting longevity by boosting the immune system and preventing abnormal blood vessel formations that could lead to life-threatening cancerous growths.

Anti-cancer properties

In another study published in Science Direct, Reishi mushrooms’ effect on cancer was investigated.

The study highlighted the role of ganoderic acid, a triterpenoid found in the Reishi mushroom, in the inhibition of the development and metastasis of tumours.

Researchers hypothesise that the mushrooms could help fight against cancer cells.

The Reishi mushroom has not only been shown to prevent the development of cancer, but research has indicated that the Reishi mushroom may also eliminate existing cancer cells in the body.

“There is now a wealth of impressive data that demonstrates Reishi’s life extending properties, but also its significant ability to stimulate brain neurons, search and destroy cancer cells and prevent the development of new fat cells in obese individuals,” said Life Extension.

The health research added: “As an example of growing science supporting Reishi, researchers using laboratory mice have detailed life span extension of nine percent to more than 20 percent —the equivalent of seven to nearly 16 years in human terms.

“As if these targeted benefits were not sufficient, Reishi’s numerous compounds show a therapeutic effect on asthma, allergies, autoimmune diseases, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, diabetes, liver disease, and more.”

How to make Reishi tea

Heat around 1g of dried mushroom or 25 ounces of fresh mushroom to boiling.

Let it boil for at least 30 minutes, or as long as two hours.

You can optionally add ginger, orange peel, or honey in the last 10 minutes for flavour.

Strain the boiled tea and enjoy.
