Im a pharmacist – there are potential side effects to weight loss drug Wegovy
Michael Gove says Government need to 'tackle' obesity
Wegovy, which carries the active ingredient semaglutide, is a weight loss drug often prescribed to people who have type 2 diabetes.
Pharmacist Khosla, at Now Patient, said: “Wegovy is a drug which is being widely spoken about within the news due to its association with weight loss.
“But it’s important to understand the benefits and side effects of the drug before taking it, as well as whether you’re eligible to take Wegovy or not.”
Wegovy, which must be prescribed, is injected into the body weekly to aid in effective weight loss.
Who is eligible?
In most cases, Wegovy can be prescribed to obese adults between the ages of 18 to 75 who have certain health conditions.

Examples include high blood pressure, fatty liver disease, and diabetes, but your doctor will let you know if this applies to you.
Khosla added: “When taken correctly, Wegovy can help to suppress a person’s appetite and help them feel fuller for longer.
“But it’s not just a case of injecting the drug once a week and then you will see results, you have to make lifestyle changes as well.”
Khosla said: “Alongside taking the drug, you also need to incorporate a healthy diet into your lifestyle and exercise regularly for the drug to be as effective as it can be.”

The expert cautioned: “Another factor to consider is, like all drugs and medication, Wegovy does have the potential to carry some side effects for those taking it.”
Khosla said Wegovy intake can lead to “headaches, vomiting, nausea and diarrhoea”.
The pharmacist advised: “If you are taking Wegovy and display any of these symptoms, you should speak to your GP or a relevant health professional.”
Semaglutide is also licensed under the brand names Ozempic and Rybelsus, which help manage blood glucose levels in those with type 2 diabetes.
Fellow pharmacist at Now Patient, Stefano Mirabello, said: “The potential benefits of Wegovy medication are numerous.
“Particularly for individuals who are overweight or obese and at high risk of diabetes and heart disease.”
Pharmacist Mirabello added: “In addition to promoting weight loss, Wegovy can also improve blood sugar control, reduce blood pressure, and potentially reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
“It also has the potential to improve quality of life by reducing feelings of hunger and increasing feelings of fullness.”
