Last September, viewers of the dancing competition let Shirley Ballas know that when she raised her arm, they noticed a concerning lump. Expressing her gratitude, the global coach for dancers posted a video of herself on Instagram. On the social media platform, she said: “To those people who were concerned enough to send me messages that they saw lumps and bumps, I am very, very grateful.”

Luckily for the 62-year-old, she got the all-clear, meaning there was no cancer.

In a recent post, dated Wednesday, September 28, 2022, Ballas posted: “I value @macmillancancer so much.

“They are there for you whenever you need them most, whatever you have on your mind.

“A Coffee Morning is a brilliant way of supporting them so they can be there for even more people affected by cancer.

Cancer can cause you to lose your appetite, it could lead to recurrent indigestion, or a persistently swollen stomach.

A tumour will affect you differently depending on where it is, how big it is, and if it has spread elsewhere in the body.

Treatment will also differ depending on your own health and the tumour.

Shirley Ballas stars on Strictly Come Dancing, on BBC One on Saturday, October 1 at 6.30pm.

“If you’re hosting one on Friday, thank you, and if you need one to attend just search ‘Coffee Morning’ to find one near you.”

Cancer symptoms

The NHS says a lump that is noticeably increasing in size on the body should be checked out by a medical professional.

“It’s important to regularly check your breasts, underarms, groin and testicles for any new lumps or changes,” the health body adds.

Macmillan points out three ways to recognise the symptoms of cancer, which are ongoing, unexplained, and unusual symptoms.

Ongoing symptoms mean they linger for three weeks or more, and that it has no obvious cause.

Moreover the persistent symptom “is not normal for you”, which warrants a trip to the doctor’s office.

General indications of cancer could include unexplained bleeding or bruising, lumps or swellings, pain, fatigue, infections, and unexplained weight loss.

Initially, while waiting for the results of her tests to come back, Ballas felt “anxious”.

But when she got the all-clear, Ballas felt like she could finally breathe.

Going for a medical check-up can be an overwhelming experience, especially if you are frightened it could be cancer.

Yet, by not getting any niggling symptoms checked, if there is disease in the body, it is likely to get worse without diagnosis and treatment.

Any type of cancer becomes more treatable the earlier it is discovered.
