It is estimated that 34 years of an average lifetime is spent staring at screens and as millions continue to work and seek entertainment from home, the increase in screen time has been significant for many. As people of all ages are spending more hours focused on digital screens, their eyes are getting an exhausting endurance workout. Could blue-light glasses be the answer to helping keep your eyes healthy? Eyecare expert and in-house optician at WALDO’s spoke exclusively with Express.co.uk to offer her insight.
Asked how blue-light glasses could help the eyes, Anita Mistry, eyecare expert at WALDO’s and in house optician, answered: “The benefits of WALDO’s new Blue-Light Glasses are numerous for wearers and include reduction of eye strain, sleep improvement and minimisation of risk of screen-induced headaches which are brought on by excessive consumption of blue-light through screen time.
“By reducing each of these symptoms, WALDO’s Blue-Light Glasses are able to empower wearers to partake in their daily activities without experiencing the negative impact of blue-light that comes with over-exposure to screens.”
Most digital screens are backlit and emit blue light, or high-energy visible (HEV) light wavelengths, which the group said can cause irritation and possibly long-term damage to the retina.
Blue light is also known to suppress the sleep hormone melatonin, causing an artificial feeling of wakefulness and disrupting sleep patterns, which can add to eye strain.
Dryness, caused by reduced blinking while staring at screens, is also a common factor in digital eye strain. A person’s blink rate – normally about 15-20 times per minute – can decrease by up to half when people are fixated on what they’re viewing on a screen.
Full benefits of WALDO’s new Blue-Light Glasses include:
Blocking 100 percent of blue light up to 410nm to reduce headaches, digital eye strain and improve sleep
Providing 100 percent protection against UV-A and UV-B rays
Adjustable acetate frames, made from renewable resources and biodegradable materials
Anti-glare, anti-reflective and scratch resistant lens
Some symptoms people experience when their eyes are dry include blurry vision, burning, irritation, heavy or tired eyes, eye strain, and even tearing up (reflex response to the dryness)
These symptoms can lead to eye strain, headaches, and even stress.
The level of discomfort also increases with prolonged computer use and may worsen over time.
Any of the above symptoms in association with computer use has been referred to as “computer vision syndrome”.
Founder and CEO of WALDO, Ashleigh Hinde added: “A focus on eyecare is truly essential, especially in a digital, urban world where we are expecting so much of our eyes.
“WALDO’s blue light glasses offer another chance for us to help our customers to prioritise their eyecare affordably as well as offer the same opportunity to someone in need through our Buy One, Give Vision initiative.”
