Everyone Loves This New Starbucks Drink So Much They've Already Added It to the Permanent Menu
Starbucks is adding a new drink to its permanent menu. And if you wanted a new drink that’s particularly Instagram-friendly, you’re in luck. The new Mango Dragonfruit Refresher is bright pink!
Even better, your barista won’t give you a side-eye if you want to order the new drink. That’s because it’s an official part of the Starbucks permanent menu, not the secret menu. Baristas say that some of the most obnoxious drinks you can order are secret menu concoctions that most Starbucks employees don’t know how to make.
The new Mango Dragonfruit Refresher is an official menu item instead of a limited edition or a secret menu creation. Here’s what you need to know.
What does the Mango Dragonfruit Refresher include?
As People reports, Starbucks says that the new Mango Dragonfruit Refresher features the “sweet tropical flavors” of mango and dragonfruit. The drink has no artificial coloring or sweeteners. Baristas will also prepare each drink with hand-shaken pieces of red dragonfruit. (That’s what gives the drink its vibrant color.) And there’s more to dragonfruit than just its good looks. The fruit offers a healthy dose of important nutrients, including vitamin C, B vitamins, protein, carotene, healthy fatty acids, and calcium. Plus, the whole drink has fewer than 100 calories in a 16-ounce (grande) serving.
You can customize the drink, too
Many people love customizing their Starbucks drinks to include their favorite ingredients (or to avoid ingredients that they’d prefer not to have in their diets). Starbucks has pretty much embraced that trend. And People reports that you can put your own spin on the newest menu item. “Ask your barista to use coconut milk in the drink instead of water for a creamier version of the beverage,” the publication recommends.
Starbucks wants to cut back on limited-edition drinks
Though Starbucks doesn’t mind when you want to customize your drink, the chain wants to stop making as many limited-edition drinks. Grub Street reported earlier this year that Starbucks plans to cut the number of limited-time drinks by 30%. As the publication explains, “a legion of very brightly colored, unnecessarily sugary, totally coffeeless, $5-a-pop iced-milk drinks have overtaken the chain’s seasonal offerings.” Starbucks plans to stop that madness — likely to the relief of both baristas, and people tired of seeing the drinks dominating their Instagram feeds.
But is the Mango Dragonfruit Refresher the new unicorn frappuccino?
Unicorn Frappuccino | Starbucks
Corporate strategy aside, if the Mango Dragonfruit Refresher reminds you just a little bit of the unicorn frappuccino — one of the most overrated Starbucks drinks, if you ask us — you’re not alone. The pink hue looks suspiciously Instagram-ready, just like the pink-and-blue frappuccino that went viral. Food52 noted that nobody ordered the unicorn frappuccino for its flavor (mango ” offset by sour, citric notes from its blue drizzle”). The new Mango Dragonfruit Refresher also looks like it was designed to look great in an Instagram shot, but may have a better shot at delivering a flavor that customers actually like.
It also reminds us of the ‘pink drink’
Anyone with a memory for Starbucks’ most viral creations will remember the “pink drink,” which took over people’s Instagram and Facebook feeds just like the unicorn frappuccino. Real Simple characterizes this beverage as “a mix of Starbucks’ Strawberry Acai Refresher and coconut milk, topped off with a scoop of strawberries.” The pink drink proved so popular that Starbucks actually put the drink on its official menu, to be served year-round. That meant that devotees could stop handing over their phones to baristas who didn’t know what ingredients to include.
This isn’t the only new drink on the Starbucks menu
As People points out, the Mango Dragonfruit Refresher isn’t the only new drink to hit the Starbucks menu in recent months. The company has focused on revamping its frappuccino menu. And so far, the company has added three new blended beverages to its lineup. You can now order a strawberry frappuccino, an ultra mocha frappuccino, and an ultra caramel frappuccino. Starbucks has also added cold brew whipped cream and vegan macadamia cookies to its menu.
