This Is The Latest Wellness Craze To Take Over Instagram
Matcha is undoubtedly one of the biggest buzzwords in the wellness world right now.
It’s loaded with antioxidants, helps with mood and concentration, is proven to protect against cancer and heart disease and has major anti-aging and weight loss benefits.
But if you fancy yourself a fan of the green stuff already, it’s time to get pumped: coz it’s Indigo coloured cousin is about to rock your culinary world.
Unlike traditional matcha which is made from the leaves of green tea – blue matcha comes from the dried flowers of the butterfly pea plant.
“Blue matcha isn’t actually anything like green matcha (apart from that it’s a powder and it’s confusingly called the same!” author of the Low Fad Diet and dietician Jo Travers told Metro UK.
It’s also significantly lower in caffeine and has an entirely different antioxidant profile, but it does have some health perks of its own.
According to retailer Blue Chai, it improves overall cell health and contains Proanthocyanidin which increases the collagen and elasticity in our skin and protects it from free radicals. Similar to green tea, it’s also said to improve eye health, memory, hair strength and reduce stress.
Plus, when it’s added to smoothies, desserts, chia pudding or chocolate it throws serious mermaid vibes.
But before you start sipping blue matcha like it’s water, it’s important to note that at this stage the research is pretty limited.
“Although blue matcha may contain some antioxidants and looks pretty on Instagram, I would stick to green matcha if it’s the health benefits you are after,” Jo added.
