Hair loss treatment: The vegetable juice proven to increase hair growth
Hair loss can be a gradual process. Don’t fret. One vegetable juice has been shown to promote hair growth. What is it?
In the Journal Of Dermatology, researchers investigated whether a topical application of one specific juice would increase hair growth compared to tap water.
There were two groups: one consisted of 23 patients, 16 male and seven females.
This group applied onion juice to their hair twice daily for two months.

The other group, which consisted of 15 patients – eight males and seven females – did the same application, but with tap water instead.
Scientists observed “re-growth of terminal coarse hairs” after two weeks in those who applied onion juice.
By the fourth week, “hair re-growth was seen in 17 patients”, which then increased to 20 patients after week six.
This was for the group who applied onion juice topically to their hair.
In the group applying tap water to their hair twice a day, only two patients showed any signs of hair growth within the eight weeks.
What’s so special about onions?
Belonging to the lily family, onions contain high levels of sulphur – a nutritional element our bodies need.
Keratin – a structural protein key for making hair – is sulphur-rich.
Onion juice added to the hair and scalp can provide extra sulphur, thereby supporting strong and thick hair.
How to make onion juice
Peel onions and chop them into small pieces.
Extract the juice out of the onions by either squeezing them or using a juicer.
Another option is to use a blender to make an onion juice paste.
From there, the onion juice can be applied to the hair and scalp.

To reap the benefits of onion juice, use the juice of a raw onion. This is when it contains a variety of organic sulphur compounds.
These are partly destroyed by heat, if you cook the onion.
What about the smell?
Onions are notorious for having a strong odour, and this certainly will apply if putting onto your hair.
Should you attempt to put onion juice on your hair and scalp, rinse with cold water afterwards. Then wash with soap and rinse with warm water.
How to store onions
Onions should be stored at room temperature, away from bright light and in a well ventilated area.
All onions should be stored away from potatoes. This is because potatoes will absorb the onions’ moisture and ethylene gas, causing them to spoil sooner.
Onions have also been a traditional medicine for the relief of coughs, colds and asthma.
Research has shown that eating onions, which contain allyl propyl disulphide, can help to balance blood sugar levels.
