Migraines are recognised as a significant disorder which sufferers often experiencing intense symptoms that range from visual disturbance to vomiting, dizziness to vertigo. More than 90 per cent of people with migraines say they can not work or function normally due to the ailment. While many sufferers turn to drug therapies to combat their symptoms, Ayurvedic and naturopathic remedies could be the healthier solution. Migraine awareness week starts on the 1st September and Doctor Sreelal Sankar and Doctor Poornima Sreelal have compiled their overview to help migraines sufferers tackle this condition.
Migraines may be triggered by eyestrain from using computers and watching television.
Causes include digestive imbalances, the accumulation of digestive toxins, exposure to environmental pollution and toxins found in food, air and water, and excess stress as expressed in anger, frustration, and mood swings.
Migraines are a common health condition that affects around one in every five women and around one in every 15 men.
According to Doctor Sankar and Doctor Sreelal, the key to reducing migraines is to follow a diet and lifestyle that will pacify the headache.

Eat lighter foods
Since an imbalanced digestion is at the root of most headaches, it’s wise to eat lighter foods.
Favour freshly cooked, whole, organic foods that are served warm and are easy to digest.
In general, a facto-vegetarian diet is recommended, with light dairy products, pulses, nuts and seeds for protein.
Avoid eating heavy foods
Foods such as aged cheese, butter, yogurt, red meat, and processed, frozen, canned and packaged foods are best to stay away from if suffering from migraines.
These foods have one thing in common, they are difficult to digest and contribute to the digestive disturbances that are the cause of most headaches.
Follow a lifestyle that eliminates stress
Research shows that regular practice of meditation is the most effective technique available for dissolving stress-aggravated conditions, allowing people to manage tension to the extent that headaches or other pain-aggravated conditions are reduced or eliminated altogether.
Never suppress natural urges
Urges such as urinating, moving the bowels or even sneezing should not be avoided as it might contribute to headaches and migraines.
At the same time, ayurvedic practices warn against forcing any of these natural urges as it can cause strain on the body and result in headaches.
Go to bed early and rise early
Falling asleep before 10pm has advantages. It allows the body to gain the most benefit from its natural cleansing cycle which takes place between 10pm to 2am.
During this time the digestive system purifies itself of toxins. To prepare for deep sleep, eat a light dinner before 8pm, shut off the TV and computer and listen to soothing music before bed.
