And the Most Hated Halloween Candy This Year Is…

“Dear Candy Corn, I hate your stinking guts. You make me vomit. You’re scum between my toes! Love, America.” This is how I imagine America’s hate letter to candy corn would read, and after seeing CandyStore.com’s recently published list of the worst Halloween candies, it’s probably dead-on. According to the site, candy corn is the most hated Halloween candy this year, edging out last year’s No. 1 offender, Circus Peanuts.

CandyStore.com took 12 lists of the best and worst candies published on websites such as BuzzFeed, Business Insider, HelloGiggles, Mental Floss, Bon Appetit, and more. They then surveyed more than 40,000 of their customers, leading them to this list of the worst Halloween candy:

“I’m actually shocked,” CandyStore.com writes. “Look, if you don’t like candy corn, you can just give it to me. Yes, it’s just sugar. Isn’t that the point? Candy corn is nothing special. There are absolutely better candies out there. But if you can’t enjoy stuffing handfuls of candy corn into your pie hole, well, I don’t even know what to tell you. But clearly, I’m well in the minority.”

And I’m with CandyStore.com on this one. How can you hate candy corn that much when Wax Coke Bottles literally have the word “wax” in the name? Or when cardboard-tasting Smarties exist in the world? And please do not get me start on Bit-O-Honey.

Eater reporter Kate Willsky put it best last year, while describing the taste of candy corn: “There’s a nuttiness reminiscent of marzipan, hints of warm vanilla, a buttery flavor belied by the fact that candy corn is, as bags proudly proclaim, a fat-free candy.” Convinced yet?

Or, let’s consider candy corn’s historical relevance. Candy corn was invented in the 1880s, far before Reese’s and Snickers (early 1900s). And it’s continued to fly off the shelves; according to the National Confectioners’ Association, 35 million pounds of candy corn are produced annually, with a “vast majority” sold each year. So, clearly there are fans out there.

Love ’em or hate ’em, candy corn is here to stay — even if it topped CandyStore.com’s worst Halloween candy list this year.
