When taken over a long period of time, glucosamine sulphate may also help to slow down the progression of osteoarthritis.
In a study with Springer Link, the effect of glucosamine on osteoarthritis was investigated.
The authors surveyed randomised controlled studies that examined the effects oolong-term daily glucosamine conjoint space narrowing.
The data available showed that glucosamine may delay radiological progression of osteoarthritis of the knee after daily administration.
Studies on glucosamine supplement to treat osteoarthritis
Like glucosamine, chondroitin is a building block of cartilage. It may also help prevent cartilage breakdown for osteoarthritis.
Many clinical studies have found that chondroitin can reduce joint pain and stiffness in people with osteoarthritis.
In a study with the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, chondroitin for osteoarthritis was analysed.
The study noted: “Chondroitin has emerged as a new treatment.”
The study found that about 53 per cent of people who take chondroitin have a 20 per cent or greater improvement in knee pain.

Turmeric as a supplement for joint pain
Turmeric is one of the most popular supplements for treating pain, including joint pain caused by osteoarthritis.
Its pain-relieving effects are attributed to a chemical compound in turmeric called curcumin.
Curcumin also has anti-inflammatory effects.
In one analysis wit the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, turmeric was looked at for its arthritis treating capabilities.
The study found that it improves symptoms of joint pain more than a placebo and may be comparable to ibuprofen.
Symptoms and signs of joint pain include joint redness, swelling, warmth, limping, locking of the joint, stiffness and weakness.
The causes for this joint pain could include bone tumour, cartilage tear or a synovial sarcoma.
