They May Be Friends Now, but Alex Guarnaschelli Didn't Like Bobby Flay at First
Alex Guarnaschelli and Bobby Flay are great friends these days, but it wasn’t always so. In a recent interview with People magazine, Guarnaschelli opened up about what she really thought of Bobby Flay before she met him.
Just like us, she loved watching Food Network shows. Her opinion of Flay? "I was like, ‘I don’t like that guy. That guy thinks he’s so cool with his grill and spatula.’"
It wasn’t until they actually started working together that Guarnaschelli softened to Flay. In fact, he produced one of her first shows (Alex’s Day Off). Though "he stood on the set with his mirrored sunglasses like a fire-breathing dragon," and generally terrified her, Flay soon won over Guarnaschelli thanks to his advice.
He told her that at the end of the day, it was all about cooking and that she should focus on that. He also gave her some essential showbiz advice. "He told me, ‘make sure you like what you’re wearing and make sure you’re comfortable." It may sound like a little thing, but when you’re on camera, the last thing you want is to be distracted because your hosiery is bunching or your shirt is making you too hot under all those lights.
Now, when Guarnaschelli is on camera, it looks totally effortless, and some of that comes from the early advice of Flay.
These days, the two are pals. "He’s one of my closest friends now," Guarnaschelli told People. She "realized it was probably just jealousy" that made her wary of him in the beginning, but now? "He’s amazing!"
Guarnaschelli also dished on what she thought about another Food Network Star, Ina Garten. She told People magazine, "Remember the painter Bob Ross, the ‘fluffly little clouds’ guy with the hypnotic voice? I think Ina is the Bob Ross of food." We couldn’t agree more, Alex.
She continued, "I wanted her roast chicken, I wanted to go pick those tulips and make the biscuits with vanilla extract in them. I would just pretend that I was inside her life and in her kitchen."
We’re glad she didn’t let her first impression of Bobby Flay get in the way of a long and lasting friendship, because they’re probably our favorite cooking duo to watch on TV.
