Victoria Beckham's Birthday Cake Is Dividing The Internet

There are a few universal truths about having a birthday: You’ll get some presents, snag a free coffee at Starbucks, and enjoy a piece of cake.

Which is why the world was really confused by Victoria Beckham’s Instagram video on Tuesday showing off her birthday cake…that definitely wasn’t cake.

Instead, Victoria, who turned 44 on Tuesday, celebrated with a candle stuck into a big hunk of watermelon—with a bunch of berries dumped on top.

For the record, that’s not cake. Cakes are generally made with sugar, flour, icing, and ideally include some kind of chocolate. What Posh had was a pile of fruit scraped together to form a cake shape.

And Victoria actually seemed happy about her non-cake. She wrote in the caption that she’s a “very lucky mummy,” and gave a shoutout to her husband and kids.

The icing on the faux-cake—someone used a knife in the video to slice the teeniest of pieces as everyone sang.

Plenty of Posh fans voiced their confusion. “You deprive yourself of a proper cake on your birthday,” one person commented. “Can you not just eat a normal cake for one day,” wrote another. Another summed up everyone’s thoughts with a succinct, “IS THAT WATERMELON” comment.

But to be fair, others were totally on-board with the idea. “It’s a healthy cake. so inspiring for me,” wrote one person. Others tagged their friends, suggesting that they try it.

Victoria has been totally open in the past about the fact that she’s on a pretty strict diet. “You know, I eat very healthily,” she told Elle back in 2014. “I eat lots of fish, lots of vegetables, and a lot of fruit. I work out every day, six or seven days.”

Apparently Victoria’s love of birthday fruit runs deep. Back in 2012, she tweeted out a photo of a festive plate of fruit, alongside the message “Birthday lunch!!! such a lovely day!!!!”

We’re pretty sure a pile of fruit isn’t “lunch” the way a hunk of watermelon isn’t “cake.” While we dig Victoria’s culinary creativity, let’s just call a spade a spade. Frankly, we’d change that Instagram caption to “I turned 44 and all I got was a pile of fruit with a candle in it? #whattheeff.”
