Potassium is a crucial mineral that helps to balance out the negative effects of sodium on the body. Too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure.
Coconut water contains more potassium per serving that most other foods and drinks, it said.
“Coconut water has become increasingly popular as a drink around the world because of its natural ingredients, electrolytes, and mineral content combined with its low levels of fat, calories, and carbohydrates,” said the medical website.
“Coconut water health benefits include strong antioxidant effects; protection of the cardiovascular system and the liver; and reduction of cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure in animal studies.
“Increasing potassium through the diet is a well-established way to lower blood pressure and decrease the risk for cardiovascular disease.
“How much potassium is in coconut water? Coconut water may contain more than 600mg of potassium per serving, an amount higher than one serving of just about any other food or beverage.
“Because of its high potassium content, coconut water has been studied for its effects in controlling high blood pressure and has been shown to decrease both systolic [the top number] and diastolic [the bottom number] blood pressure.”
Drinking coconut water could also help to lower your risk of diabetes, scientists have claimed.
Containing just 3g of fibre and 6g of carbohydrates, coconut water can easily fit into a diabetes diet plan.
It also contains plenty of magnesium, which increases insulin sensitivity, and lower blood sugar levels in people with both type 2 diabetes and pre diabetes.
