High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than a quarter of all adults in the UK. But you could slash your chances of developing hypertension by making sure you do regular exercise, it’s been claimed.

High blood pressure – which is also known as hypertension – puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.

The condition could lead to some deadly complications, including strokes and heart attacks.

It could be caused by eating an unhealthy diet, or by not doing enough exercise.

One of the easiest ways to avoid hypertension is to change your home workout routine.

Exercise is crucial for maintaining a healthy blood pressure, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The best types of exercise for hypertension patients are aerobic exercises, it added.

There are several aerobic exercises that you can do from home, including walking, jogging (on the spot), cycling (using a stationary bike), or even dancing.

Just 30 minutes of activity on most days should be enough to lower your blood pressure.

“Lifestyle plays an important role in treating your high blood pressure,” it said.

“Regular physical activity — such as 150 minutes a week, or about 30 minutes most days of the week — can lower your blood pressure by about five to eight mmHg if you have high blood pressure.

“It’s important to be consistent because if you stop exercising, your blood pressure can rise again.

“If you have elevated blood pressure, exercise can help you avoid developing hypertension. If you already have hypertension, regular physical activity can bring your blood pressure down to safer levels.”

You could also lower your blood pressure by doing high-intensity interval training (HIIT), it added.

HIIT involves using short bursts of intense energy with periods of lighter activity.

Strength training is another crucial aspect to lowering your blood pressure.

You should include around two days every week of strength training into your workout routine.

High blood pressure is often known as ‘the silent killer’, because symptoms only tend to reveal themselves if you have extremely high blood pressure.

The most common high blood pressure symptoms include a pounding in your chest, finding blood in your urine, and severe headaches.

It’s crucial that all adults over 40 years old check their blood pressure at least once every five years.

You can check your blood pressure by visiting your local doctors’ surgery or pharmacy.
