What Does 'The Tig' Mean? The Meaning Behind The Name Of Meghan Markle's Lifestyle Blog
Meghan Markle’s meteoritic rise into the spotlight after falling in love with Prince Harry has meant that many people are digging deep to discover everything there is to know about the engrossing addition to the royal family. One of the biggest queries? Everything there is to know about her now-closed lifestyle blog The Tig.
According to an archived version of the site, The Tig is: “a hub for the discerning palate – those with a hunger for food, travel, fashion & beauty.”
The 37-year-old wrote that with the blog she wanted to, “create a space to share all of these loves, to invite friends to share theirs as well, and to be the breeding ground for ideas & excitement – for an inspired lifestyle.”
But what does ‘The Tig’ mean and why did Markle opt for the title? Well, there are a couple of reasons.
Firstly, ‘Tig’ is a widely used nickname for a full-bodied red wine called Tignanello, created by Tuscan winery Antinori. The tipple features a blend of Sangiovese (80%), Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) and Cabernet Franc (5%), and can set you back anywhere from $90 to $150 a bottle, depending on the vintage.
According to Antinori’s website, “It was the first Sangiovese wine to be aged in small oak barrels, the first modern red wine to use such non-traditional varieties as Cabernet in the blend, and among the first red wines from the Chianti Classico area to be produced without white grapes.”
On The Tig’s about me section, she writes that her first experience tasting the wine offered a deeper explanation into the meaning behind the blog’s title.
“Several years ago I had a sip of wine called Tignanello (pronounced “teen-ya-nello“),” she writes. “But let’s be real – in the states most people said “tig-na-nello“…or just plain old “Tig.” The Italiano of it all gets a little tricky, so the bartender kept it simple; it was a glass of “Tig.“ So there I am, with very minimal wine knowledge and I take a sip of this wine. It wasn’t just red or white – suddenly I understood what people meant by the body, legs, structure of wine. It was an ah-ha moment at its finest. For me, it became a “Tig” moment – a moment of getting it.”
Markle says that from that point onwards, any new discoveries or “aha moments” were called a “Tig” moment.
“At New York Fashion Week understanding that clothes aren’t just pieces of fabric, but that they can be art. So Tig. Traveling off the beaten track and hand diving for sea urchin in Jamaica – understanding that travel is adventure and discovery, culture and surprise. A Tig moment, indeed. And the same could be said for my love of cooking and dining, for cultivating friendships that inspire you, for the idea of “beauty” and what that means to us. An understanding that comes with living your life to the fullest so that it bursts at the seams. An unbridled joy. An insatiable curiosity. That’s what Tig means to me.”
So not only is Markle’s blog named after her favourite wine (relatable) but it’s a nod to understanding (and appreciating) the world more broadly. Deep.
