Experts Say This Anti-Acne Diet Will Banish Breakouts For Good

You’ve probably heard that eating certain foods can make your acne ten times worse (sup, pizza!). But according to new research, it’s time to put this theory to bed.

“Fried foods are often linked to blemishes as people think they cause greasy skin,” explains Pam Smyrnios, beauty and Makeup educator at The Masters Institute of Creative Education. “But contrary to popular belief excess fatty acids do not flow out of your pores.”

Instead, she says the main food group to avoid is dairy. “There’s research that indicates that dairy products do have an impact on acne breakouts and studies indicate that substances in milk can influence acne triggers,” adds Pam.

Food with a high glycemic load can also take a toll: “Foods high in sugar and simple carbohydrates spike sugar levels which have been connected with skin flare-ups.”

“To eliminate foods with a high glycemic load, avoid pasta, white rice, white bread and anything high in sugar,” advises Pam.

So, what should we be eating to keep breakouts under control?

Pam suggests chowing down on anything high in omega fatty acids. Think salmon and avocado and foods with antioxidants such as berries and leafy greens.

“You should also eat foods with a low GI such as complex carbohydrates like whole grains, legumes and organic fruit and vegetables,” she says.

Foods high in zinc such as pumpkin seeds, cashews, quinoa and lentils are given the green light too.

“But healthy eating aside, you should never forget your skincare routine and you should cleanse, tone and moisturise your skin daily as well as have weekly masks/scrubs and monthly facials,” adds Pam.
